91°µÍøºÚÁÏ President Emeritus elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

AG  headUniversity of Detroit Mercy’s President Emeritus and Distinguished University Professor Antoine M. Garibaldi was recently elected as a fellow to the . Garibaldi served as 91°µÍøºÚÁÏ’s first lay president from 2011 to 2022.

Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences honors excellence and convenes leaders from every field of human endeavor to examine new ideas, address issues of importance to the nation and the world, and work together, as expressed in its charter, “to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity and happiness of a free, independent and virtuous people.”

The Academy’s work has helped set the direction of research and analysis in science and technology policy, global security and international affairs, social policy, education, the humanities and the arts.

Garibaldi joins the company of many notable members, a list that includes John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Colin Powell, John F. Kennedy, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Winston Churchill, to name a few. The formal induction celebration and ceremony will take place Sept. 29-30 in Cambridge, Mass., where the Academy’s headquarters are located.

He was one of and was joined by Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson and actor, director and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, among others.
