Biography
Tim Hipskind entered his professional career with a masters in Mechanical Engineering and worked as a consulting engineer for three years until his interests began to shift a bit. This shift eventually led him to enter the Jesuit order in 1988.
Tim’s 12 years of Jesuit formation included studies in Philosophy, Theology and Spirituality, as well as work in Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, Calif., and Mexico City, with a special focus on discernment and small Christian communities, especially Christian Life Communities (CLC.) Tim’s work with discernment led to the publication of What’s Your Decision? – a book about decision making in the Ignatian tradition.
After ordination in 2000, Tim worked as a member of the Claver Jesuit Ministry Project in Cincinnati until 2009, including community organizing and working with two neighborhood groups to start a computer center and project to bring the youth and elders in the community together. Since 2010, Tim has been the director of Community Engaged Learning and co-director of the Institute for Leadership and Service at University of Detroit Mercy.
In his spare time, Tim loves to explore the outdoors through backpacking, hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing. He also is the proud father of three blooming orchid plants, two African violets and one Christmas cactus, along with an assortment of green plants he calls friends.
