Master's Entry Advanced Generalist Nursing

Description

The Master’s Entry Advanced Generalist Nursing (MEAGN) program provides students who have earned a bachelor’s degree the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Nursing degree and be eligible for the licensure as a registered nurse.  This full-time program is designed to prepare the advanced generalist nurse who can address contemporary issues at entry-level practice in an evolving health care environment. Innovative combinations of prelicensure content and master’s level courses, along with integrated clinical experiences are features of this comprehensive program. 

The MEAGN program prepares the nurse to function at the point of patient care to recognize, intervene, and evaluate care practices and processes.  Beyond a bachelor’s prepared entry level nurse, this professional contributes to health care as a catalyst for improvement, role model for critical thinking, holistic provider of care, and expert patient advocate.  The advanced generalist nurse becomes a vital member of the health care team, poised to enhance the safety and quality of care that improves patient outcomes. 

Upon successfully completing the MEAGN program and passing NCLEX, graduates are automatically eligible to complete course work and qualify for certification as a Clinical Nurse Leader from the AACN Commission on Nurse Certification.  Graduates also qualify to apply directly to certificate or doctoral programs in advanced nurse practice.  The graduate who wishes to pursue advanced nursing practice will have preferred admission status into the McAuley School of Nursing’s existing graduate programs, including Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Health Systems Administration. 

The MEAGN program requires completion of 55 credits of coursework to be completed over five consecutive 15-week semesters.  All courses are required and include prelicensure nursing and graduate level core courses consisting of a combination of didactic, lab, and clinical practicum components. In accordance with graduate nursing program standards, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and grades of B- or better in all courses for continued progression. Students will be subject to policies outlined in the Graduate Nursing Handbook when not meeting standards for academic progression, which may include academic probation, repeating a single course, or dismissal from that program.

    Program Outcomes

    The following outcomes will be achieved upon completion of the MEAGN program:
    1. Demonstrate professional role practice consistent with the competencies of the unique specialty at the master’s level.
    2. Translate theoretical and conceptual knowledge into advanced nursing practice actions that promote optimal health care quality and patient safety outcomes.
    3. Integrate informatics, health care technology, and interpersonal collaboration in the delivery of person-centered nursing practice for individuals and populations.
    4. Engage in systems leadership with a focus on preventive care, policy development, and patient advocacy.

    MEAGN Admission Criteria

    Application Requirements

    1. Submission of completed application and all supplemental materials six months prior to the term to which they wish to be considered for entry.
    2. Minimum baccalaureate cumulative grade point average of 3.25 preferred
    3. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in sciences and math courses. Community college credit will be given consideration in determining the quality and level of preparation.
    4. Evidence of experience in the health care field through employment, volunteering, or observational experiences.

    All science courses, including mathematics, must have been completed within the last five years with grades of C+ or higher on each.  If courses have been repeated, a grade of B or higher is expected. 

    Required Supplemental Application Materials

    1. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.
    2. For prerequisite courses in progress, a printed copy of the current registration/course schedule.
    3. Conferred bachelor's degree posted on the home institution's final transcript.
    4. Updated transcripts, upon conclusion of each term/semester, posting results of recently completed academic coursework.
    5. Autobiographical Statement of Personal Goals and Objectives (Essay)
    • Introduction to members of the selection committee
    • Personal information (personality characteristics; challenges faced and overcome; personal achievements; why particular career path selected)
    • Traits that support ability to succeed at the graduate level
    • Strategies to learn in the online environment
    • Ability to study in an accelerated format
    • Vision of self in the role of master’s prepared advanced generalist nurse.
    1. Letters of recommendation - a minimum of three are required. Please limit your references to a maximum of four.  The online recommendation system should be utilized, and letter attached to it. All letters ought to appear on official business or institutional letterhead, contain an original signature and the reference's professional title with contact information.  At least one letter should attest to the candidate’s potential for leadership and ability to learn online at the graduate level.

    4. All international applicants, for whom English is not their native, must present evidence of meeting University and graduate nursing English Language Requirements.
    5. Applicants who are non-citizens or non-permanent residents of the United States, please note additional requirements for international students.
      1. All program prerequisites must be completed at an accredited U.S. college/university.
    An overseas bachelor's degree will be considered IF determined completed and U.S. equivalent on an official, course-by-course/detailed evaluation report prepared by Educational Credential Evaluators or World Education Services.
